DAy #186: PUP

Pressure Ulcer Prevention
That's what this little guy stands for outside the doors of some of our patient's.
He's just slightly cuter than having a picture of a pressure ulcer outside the room.
Sorry - I don't know how to flip the picture :(

Day #184: Fun at work

See these 14.5 hour days aren't all bad, but they sure are tiring.

Newbie intern from the other team wearing toe shoes.

Day #182: You can call me Katniss

My hair is getting LONG.  It hasn't been this long in a while and it's starting to get in my way.  Ugh...
I am trying to hold out on cutting it until Sept 23rd, that's when official marathon training starts.  By then it will also be long enough to donate for locks of love and still be able to put my hair in a pony tail after it's cut.
So, I tried french braiding my hair to keep it out of my face and I think I did an ok job considering I haven't french braided my hair in probably 10 years.

--------------------------------

pre-marathon training
2 workouts to log - both with the dog.  Penny walked part of the way and was carried in Muttmover the rest of the time - per usual.

Milage: 1.62
total miles: 11.6
Pace: 18:45

Milage: 2.05
Total: 13.65
Pace: 19:31

I tell myself even though I'm not walking as fast as I am supposed to be that carrying Penny's extra weight evens out my slower pace.

Day #178: Monsoon Season

When I first moved to Tucson, I would often hear people talk about monsoon season.  I was prepared for these big storms, gigantic downpours, etc.  Maybe last year I wasn't in the right place at the right time, but I was not very impressed.
Well....this year, that's a different story.
Huge storm today.  I was at Sarah's house about to head home and stayed an extra hour due to the rain.
Sief was at my house and lost power.  I eventually drove home.  The roads were actually better than I expected, but there were trees down, cacti down, and power lines right near where I live down.
I assume that I won't have power for at least a day if not more due to the power lines being down.
Thankfully, there's power at Sief's apartment.

Down pour with crazy wind outside Sarah's window.

A lake in my front yard.
Lucky for me I decided to pick up dog poop this morning!
It was good plan, because there was A LOT of poop.

:( Magic Mesh - doggie door got blown down in the storm.

1 down tree near my house.
There were many more bigger ones, too.

The calm after the storm.
One of the most beautiful rainbows I've ever seen!

There was even a double rainbow, but you can't see it here.

Day #177: Jaws

--------------------------------

pre-marathon training
45 minute walk/rest this morning with Sarah, Bart, and Penny.
Penny walked ~0.5 miles and then rode on my back in Mutt- Mover.  Bart made it almost the whole way, but with about 0.25 miles left to the car he tuckered out.  He was panting up a storm and we doused him in water to cool him off.  See below.  He eventually made it back to the car, but he lengthened our pace- since we were making such good time.  haha

Mileage: 1.59
Total mileage 9.56
Pace: 28 min/mile
Tomorrow morning me on my own for a faster paced walk.

Day #176: somewhere else

--------------------------------

pre-marathon training
26 minute walk this evening w/ Sarah, Bart, Buster, and Penny.

Mileage: 1.02
Total mileage 7.97
Pace: 26.22 min/mile
Eventually I need to take this walking part of the training seriously.  I just feel bad for leaving the puppies at home. :(

Day #175: Lavender Fields

Guest photographer today - my Aunt Sara and whoever was the random person that took the picture of the 4 of them.
My mom and her sisters this last weekend took a trip up to Mt. Shasta to the Lavender fields. The close up of the lavender is now the background on my iPad. Thanks Aunt Sara.

Day #174: Sonoran hot dog anyone?

I saw this while driving home yesterday (meant to post it, but forgot :( )

A Sonoran hot dog is a hot dog wrapped in bacon. Keeps me employed.

Day #166: A Day of Firsts

July 1st, 2012
Today is my first day as a 3rd year family medicine resident.  My last year.

It is also the first day for pre-marathon training.  Remember that post a while back about me signing up for the Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2013, well I didn't forget about it - did you?
For those of you who know me, you know I am not a runner.  Due to this minor detail, my marathon trainer tells me to start with walking - hence what I am calling pre-training.  Real training will start in 10 weeks after I have hopefully worked up to being able to jog for 30 mins straight.

You may be wondering if I feel any different now that I am a 3rd year resident and training for a marathon.  My answer is no, because I did not work today and today is a rest day for my week.  Goal training-wise for the week is to walk 30mins x 3days this week.

Here is the book I am using to guide my training.  It is written by professors at a college in Idaho or somewhere.  They taught a class for both runners and non-runners and out of 200 students only 1 has not completed a marathon.  I think the odds are in my favor.

Yeah - running clothes!  Fancy running hat w/ holes given to me by my training partner Sarah, because it's too big for her head.  Score!
I bought some of my running gear a while ago and I've been wearing it quite a bit - not because I'm running, but because it's sooooo HOT here.  These clothes feel like you have nothing on and you don't even have to wear underwear, because it's built right in!  It's awesome.  I LOVE running clothes.
Still need to buy a new pair of shoes, which will happen soon.

----------------------------------------------------------
marathon training update:  from now on I'll post how training is go on a daily basis as well as total milage to that point.

milage: 0
rest day
I feel good :)  haha

Day #165: Hot Dogs

Tires, hot doggies after there 8:15 morning Walkie and lizard hunt.

Day #164: Me, hospital, midnight

Called in from home for a possible pregnant patient in labor.
Me = not happy or looking forward to the possibility of spending the night in the hospital.
Yeah! I love being a doctor on call.
It's one thing to already be in the hospital. It's another to be called in from home :(
